A Timid Start to the 2023 School Year

The back-to-school fever has not yet reached the streets of Port-au-Prince, where some neighborhoods are under the control of gangs. Some schools that opened their doors on Monday, September 11, 2023, welcomed a very reduced number of students, while others did not function at all. Public schools simply remained idle. As for provincial towns, except for the congregational schools, the crowds have not yet returned.

It was 7:30 in the morning on Monday, September 11. Traffic flowed smoothly on some major roads in Port-au-Prince. Schoolchildren were scarce—very scarce for this inaugural day of classes. The resumption of school activities was only observed in select private institutions, with notably low attendance.
