French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute on Thursday to the enslaved individual turned Republic General, Toussaint Louverture, praising the merits of "order" in service of "freedom" and those of "concord."

In a tribute that coincides with the current political and social crisis, the Head of State celebrated this "Black Spartacus," this "patriot," "absolutely French, fully Republican," on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in France.
