In 2000 when I moved from Boston, Massachusetts to the Washington, D.C., region with my husband who is African-American, I felt disconnected from the Haitian community. I deeply missed my three sisters and my many girl cousins. I began a gathering with just the 5 Haitian ladies I knew for brunch eleven years ago. We were all Haitian American professional women who had moved to DC area. The group slowly grew to 7, to 9, to 11 and then in 2010, I had a vision to expand the group and asked each person to invite women of Haitian descent they knew.

I was born in Port-au-Prince and lived there until the age of 11, when I moved to Boston, Massachusetts with my family in 1985. In Boston our family was a part of a large Haitian diaspora community and I was able to stay connected to the culture. At Harvard College, I worked with fellow students to start the Harvard Haitian Alliance.
