Water and Sustainable Development

On March 20th, the National Drinking Water and Sanitation Directorate (DINEPA in French), together with UNICEF, the Inter-American Development Bank (BID in French), and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID in French), launched Water Week to commemorate World Water Day on March 22, 2015. As usual, since 2012, this date has been commemorated in order to draw stakeholder’s attention towards the important role of access to drinking water in terms of species survivability, development, protection, and the sustainable development of the environment.

Access to water is a problem that affects much of the world population. The figures released by the UN in the 2013 report showed that around 780 million people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. In countries affected by the water and sanitation deficiency, there is a high incidence of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, and diphtheria. Bénito Dumay, General Director of DINEPA, who spoke at the launch of the commemoration activities for World Water Day, did not fail to mention Haiti among the countries facing access to the
